You cannot be serious – or can you?

OK, so it was John MacEnroe that famously exclaimed “You can NOT be serious”. And he was a tennis player. And this post is about a golf/tourism ad. So the headline might not be the most relevant ever. But it is what I exclaimed when I first saw this ad.

If you’ve been watching Canadian coverage British Open from St.Andrews you must have seen it. It’s so awful it’s… well… not actually funny.

I truly hope this is the work of somebody that said “OK… let’s produce an ad that is so damned awful that it goes viral… we’ll make it SO bad that everyone knows it is a joke… they will know that we are not serious”. And then somehow that got lost in translation.

From the cheap production values, through the terrible acting, via the rather hideous and sexist script it’s about as shambolic as France’s performance at the World Cup.

Or am I missing something?

Your thoughts and comments are welcome.

Well – if they wanted it to go Viral, here it is on a Blog. Then again, here's a comment stating “I think this ad is terrible, and not terribly funny or clever.” Though I hate the ad, I did read the URL. Though I hate the ad, I did see it. Though the ad sucks, and I don't think you're missing anything – here it is on a Blog, being discussed.

So – effective? Possibly. I'd have to see the math. I think this ad in the end creates exposure, but I don't know if that exposure will translate into any kind of demo-targeted realistic 'leads'. Though, the added exposure and obscurity of such an ad, could lead to a trickle down effect years from now. A 'classy' golf ad could just get lost in a sea of others or missed. “Seen that don't care.” I still think genuinely funny would be better.

Also – since the ad is so terrible, my blind hatred is aimed towards the people that scripted this. Not Victoria's Tourism Industry… and if the ad was too funny, I may have missed what it was about and just remembered it as a 20 second piece of entertainment.

… though if anything positive does come from this ad – I need to doubt that it was deliberate or warranted or deserved by skill. Accidentally 'okay'. Or maybe you're misleading us with your post because you secretly endorse its GENIUS.

    No more thoughts on this.
