rt Strategy recently completed a new website for Taiga Camp.
Taiga Adventure Camp is a summer camp for young women ages 11-17 from across the Northwest Territories. Independently run, but in association with the YWCA of Yellowknife, the organization needs to communicate with diverse and distinct audiences: future campers; alumni; potential staff; partners, donors and sponsors; parents & guardians; teachers and counsellors.
An information architecture that allowed these audiences to quickly find answers to common questions, while positioning the organization and communicating it’s key messages and values was needed. Add to this requirements for content management including articles and news, along with social media integration and the planning challenge quickly became one of avoiding a sprawling site structure.
A second challenge was facilitating user interaction on the site. With under-18s being a primary audience, avoiding inappropriate comments was essential. Many comment systems were reviewed before the decision to implement Facebook Connect was taken – which allows comments only by those who are logged in to a Facebook account – and features easy blacklisting & whitelisting of users.
Reaction from stakeholders to the new site has been overwhelmingly positive and the organizations reports it is proving to be a great asset in staff, camper and donor recruitment.
